Chronic respiratory diseases affect over 500 million people in the world. But almost 90% of patients struggle with their inhaled medication treatment, leading to poor disease control and frequent adverse events. Worse is the difficulty in tracking lung health at home based on symptoms alone, which can often be too late for action. The scenario hasn’t changed much in 50 years! In this talk, I’ll share our journey and pitfalls in developing engineering innovations to tackle the above challenges as well as commercializing and obtaining FDA clearances for the technologies.
Rajoshi Biswas is the Chief Scientific Officer at Cognita Labs. She holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rice University, specializing in the modeling of aerosol drug deposition. Her research spanned across conducting clinical studies on patient inhaler-use behavior as well as in-vitro drug deposition studies. She co-founded Cognita Labs with her colleagues at Rice University during her Ph.D. to develop patient-centric engineering innovations for pulmonary medication monitoring and diagnostics and has led multiple FDA filings for the devices.
